MRocky has slept well for the last 24 hours. Almost think he has slept too much. We are having a hard time getting him up. He hates the sling because it put pressure where he is bruised. He can get up on his own but now is yelping when he tries to get up and just plops back down. We have only been able to get him out twice today. His pain is well controlled today. Not sure if anyone else has run into this. He had surgery on Nov 15th. Also he has always laid on his left side, but that is his surgery side don’t know if he should be laying on his staples. Any suggestions?
We used the Ruffwear harness right from the start with our Dobe – a front amp – over a t-shirt; it didn’t interfere with his staples, and with the handle, we were able to assist him when needed.

Thanks Paula. Will definitely get a harness after staples are out. Can’t find anything to cover and stay over a rear amputation.
Otis didn’t want to get up much at that point either. I offered multiple time, but I think we only had two, maybe three, outings a day too. Keep a log so you know when you really have to get him up. Think about food bribes too. This will get better. Sleep is still the best thing for him. Unless he appears to be in pain and “stuck,” let him sleep on whichever side he wants.
Thank you for the input. Rocky spent half the night sleeping on his incision. He did wimper when he rolled off of it then right back to sleep. He got this am a went potty with encouragement and then stood to eat.
Okay, good. Rocky stood up and went out to potty!
Actually, laying on his incision could indicate the surgery site itself isn’t too awfully painful. The pressure may make it even feel better. So I wouldn’t worry about that at all.
And yeah, sleep and rest this early on is exactly what he should be doing.
Another several days and you’ll start ro see tiny glimpses of his sparkle start ro come back. I KNOW it’s so hard to be patient though!!
Hang in there! You’re doing great!
Hugs!

Thanks Sally. We are just letting Rocky call the shots now. He is having some phantom limb pain when he gets up. Tried putting some pressure over incision area, seemed to help
